Marketing Hastings heavily before bridge closure key - EMC News – Marketing Hastings and district heavily before, during and after the Lock 18 bridge closure is crucial and the municipality is prepared to help out, says Mayor Hector Macmillan. Parks Canada has said the bridge will be closed immediately after the 2012 Trent Severn Waterway navigation season ends in October and will reopen in mid-February following the $1-million repair job. They’re being heavily lobbied to have the construction period shifted to January so the shutdown misses the Christmas season. Mayor Macmillan says the municipality has a $25,000 budget that will help with Open for Business marketing initiatives. A February public meeting will unveil some concrete steps the municipality is planning to do help mitigate an obviously painful situation. Read more of this article by Bill Freeman….

Lab results received Friday, January 13, by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit show the first confirmed case of Influenza B in its area. Open house marks milestone year for Hastings Library – EMC News – By any measure it’s been a milestone year for the Hastings Public Library which capped the end of its 50th anniversary celebrations with an open house December 30. HASTINGS ranks in top five fishing communities – Community Press — The World Fishing Network has announced a Trent Hills location as one of Canada’s top five fishing spots. The website www.worldfishingnetwork.com has awarded Chapleau, Ont., $25,000 for being number one, as determined by popular vote through their competition. Hastings, however, joined Port Colborne, Ont., and Port Renfrew and Port Hardy in British Columbia on the top-five list with 35 nominations and a gallery of 88 photos.
